Many of music’s leading ladies will celebrate women of soul for a special White House concert this week. The Women of Soul: In Performance at the White House event by First lady Michelle Obama will feature performances from Aretha Franklin, Patti LaBelle, Melissa Etheridge and Janelle Monáe. Jill Scott, Ariana Grande, and Tessanne Chin will also join the festivites, streaming live this Thursday night via the White House’s website.
The show will later broadcast on PBS stations next month, on April 7. The event is to shed light on “foremothers” of American music, with songs exploring the struggles and achievements of women. The White House will hold a workshop for students to learn about the history of women in soul.
