RETURN OF THE ANKH

Posted on March 30, 2010by Vandal Arts

Erykah Badu broke onto the scene with her debut album, 1997’s Baduizm, and was instantly hailed as a key figure in nu-soul. It was widely praised and hit No.2 on the Billboard 200, eventually selling over three million copies and winning two Grammy Awards. Her second album was a live album, the imaginatively titled Live (1997), which went double platinum. She collaborated with The Roots and took time off to look after her first child. Mama’s Gun (2000) was another million-seller, and the single “Bag Lady” topped the R&B charts for seven weeks. Badu won another Grammy for her collaboration with partner Common on the Top 10 single “Love Of My Life” in 2003. Worldwide Underground followed soon afterwards, reaching No.3 on the album charts and spawning four more Grammy nominations.

Return of the Ankh

2010 release, the fifth studio album from the R&B/Neo-Soul superstar. In contrast to New Amerykah Part One (4th World War), which was digitally produced and political in tone, New Amerykah Part Two: Return of the Ankh features lush live instrumentation and taps into Badu’s emotional side by thematically focusing on romance and relationships. “We used a lot of analog instruments…harps, strings, drums, piano, and even a Theremin, to give the album that sonic feel,” says Badu. “There’s a strong undercurrent of bottom, a rumbling to these songs that feels good to me. It feels like a hug.”
